We made it everyone! Winter is over!
This is the time of year a lot of people (myself included) do some spring cleaning. We usually clean the house and eliminate most things we no longer need or want. This is a good start in becoming more green as well. This month’s Energy Insight will focus on 8 things you can do at home to become greener and conserve energy. Also, if you make it through this list there will be an important announcement at the end.
- Open up a window- The winter storm was brutal. Energy usage was some of the highest we’ve encountered since 2018. We all needed a break from colder weather, your HVAC included. This is a great time to open up windows and let Mother Nature heat and cool your home. Also plan on having the HVAC system tuned up or serviced for summer.
- Unplug unused appliances- Not only is this habit good for the environment, but it’s also good for your energy bill. Cable boxes, phone chargers, and coffee pots while not in use can still pull energy if they are plugged in.
- Use cold water for laundry- This will not only save energy, but it will help prevent clothes from shrinking and will also reduce wrinkles. Also, make sure you are washing full loads. The less your washer and dryer runs the better. Hang clothes to dry if you are able to and if you aren’t able to do so dry on a low setting.
- Lighting- Out with the old and in with the LED. We would recommend changing any light bulbs to LED. They last longer and are more cost-efficient in the long run. Incandescents will also put out unwanted heat and that’s the last thing you want in the summer.
- Grill- Charcoal or gas-fired grills may not be the greenest option on this list, but it will save on your electric bill. Incorporate a grill for most of your meals instead of using the oven.
- Plant a tree- Trees have leaves, leaves create shade, the shade will cool things off. Direct sunlight will cause your home to heat up as the day progresses. However, sunlight striking a tree’s leaves diffuses the light and will keep your cooling loads down.
- Energy Star products- Whenever you replace large items be sure to read the Energy Star label. Make sure the new item is more energy-efficient than the previous one.
- Weather-strip and caulk- Identify areas in your home where you feel drafts coming in. Seal or caulk the drafts to better assist your HVAC system.
